Description: Orcuttia species are typically small to medium-sized grasses, ranging in height from a few centimeters to over half a meter. They exhibit a distinctive scent, often described as similar to vanilla or coumarin, which is particularly strong when the plants are drying. The leaves are linear and may be flat or folded. The inflorescence is a panicle, with spikelets containing multiple florets. The awns (bristle-like appendages) on the lemmas (outer bracts enclosing the flower) are a key identifying characteristic.
Habitat and Distribution: Orcuttia grasses are exclusively found in vernal pools, temporary wetlands that fill with water during the wet season (typically winter and spring) and dry out during the summer and fall. These pools provide a unique environment that supports specialized plant communities. The distribution of Orcuttia is restricted to California, with populations scattered across the Central Valley, the Coast Ranges, and southern California.
Ecology: Orcuttia species are adapted to the extreme environmental conditions of vernal pools. They germinate and grow during the wet phase, completing their life cycle before the pool dries out.
