The Godfather (fairy tale)

The Godfather (fairy tale) is a Brothers Grimm fairy tale (KHM 42). It tells the story of a poor man who seeks a godfather for his child. He approaches God, then the Devil, but rejects them both due to their perceived flaws in judgment and fairness. Finally, he chooses Death, who impresses him with his impartiality, as Death treats everyone equally, regardless of wealth or status.

The tale revolves around the themes of mortality, fairness, and the acceptance of death as an inevitable part of life. The man uses Death's gift of foresight – the ability to see whether a person is destined to live or die – to become a famous and wealthy doctor. If Death stands at the head of the sick person, they will live; if at the foot, they will die.

The doctor eventually breaks his promise to Death by saving someone Death has designated for demise. When the doctor himself falls ill, Death stands at his feet, signifying his own impending death as punishment for his disobedience. The story serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of trying to cheat fate and defying the natural order.
