2022 Labour Party leadership election (Ireland)
The 2022 Labour Party leadership election in Ireland was held following the resignation of Alan Kelly as leader of the Labour Party on 2 March 2022. Kelly announced his intention to step down after a motion of no confidence was submitted by party members following poor polling results and internal disagreements.
The election was conducted among the members of the Labour Party using a one-member-one-vote system. Eligible voters included all fully paid-up members of the Labour Party.
Two candidates contested the election:
- Ivana Bacik, TD for Dublin Bay South
- Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, TD for Dublin Bay North
Ivana Bacik was widely considered the frontrunner due to her higher profile and support among parliamentary colleagues.
Voting commenced on 9 March 2022 and concluded on 23 March 2022. The results were announced on 24 March 2022, with Ivana Bacik being elected as the new leader of the Labour Party.
The result represented a significant moment for the Labour Party, marking the first time a woman had held the leadership position in the party's history. Bacik's election was seen by many as an opportunity to revitalise the party and appeal to a broader base of voters.
