Khovd (city)

Khovd is the capital of Khovd Province (aimag) in western Mongolia. It is located on the Buyant River at the foot of the Mongol Altai Mountains.

Geography and Climate

The city sits at an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters (4,600 feet). The climate is characterized as a cold semi-arid climate (BSk) with significant temperature variations between summer and winter. Winters are long and very cold, while summers are short and moderately warm. Precipitation is relatively low throughout the year.

History

Khovd was historically an important trading center. Its location on the Silk Road routes contributed to its development and cultural exchange. The modern city was founded in the 17th century.

Demographics

The population of Khovd is primarily composed of Khalkha Mongols, as well as smaller populations of Kazakhs, Uriankhai, and other ethnic groups. The Mongolian language is widely spoken, but Kazakh is also prevalent within the Kazakh community.

Economy

The economy of Khovd is largely based on agriculture, livestock herding, and trade. There is a local airport that provides air transport to Ulaanbaatar and other destinations. Small-scale industries and services also contribute to the local economy.
