Larry Young (politician)
Larry Young (born August 2, 1949, died November 6, 2022) was an American politician from Maryland. He served as a Democratic member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1987 to 1998 and the Maryland State Senate from 1999 to 2005, representing the 44th legislative district in Baltimore City.
Young was a controversial figure during his tenure in the Maryland General Assembly. He was known for his advocacy on issues affecting African American communities, including economic development, education, and criminal justice reform. However, his career was marked by allegations of ethical misconduct and abuse of power.
In 1998, Young was expelled from the Maryland Senate following an ethics investigation that found he had misused campaign funds and engaged in other questionable financial dealings. The investigation revealed that Young had used campaign money for personal expenses, including travel and entertainment, and had failed to properly disclose his financial interests. He was subsequently indicted on federal charges related to mail fraud and tax evasion.
After his expulsion from the Senate, Young maintained a public profile, hosting a radio program and remaining active in community affairs. He continued to be a vocal advocate for his constituents, despite the ethical cloud that surrounded his legacy.
Following his political career, Young faced continued legal challenges. He was convicted on state charges related to theft and misuse of campaign funds.
