Chen Hsi-huang (puppeteer)
Chen Hsi-huang (1931-2020) was a renowned Taiwanese puppeteer, recognized as a master of traditional hand puppetry, also known as glove puppetry (袋子戲, budaixi). Born in Taipei, he dedicated his life to preserving and promoting this unique art form.
He was the son of Lee Tien-lu, a legendary puppeteer often considered the "father" of modern Taiwanese glove puppetry. Chen Hsi-huang began learning puppetry from his father at a young age and continued the family tradition, eventually founding the Wei Wan Jan Taiwanese Glove Puppet Troupe.
Chen Hsi-huang was instrumental in revitalizing interest in Taiwanese puppetry, which had declined in popularity in the latter half of the 20th century. He was known for his innovative performances, incorporating modern elements while remaining true to the traditional techniques and stories. He also focused on training new generations of puppeteers to ensure the continuation of the art form.
Throughout his career, Chen Hsi-huang received numerous awards and accolades, both domestically and internationally, recognizing his contributions to Taiwanese culture and the art of puppetry. His dedication helped elevate Taiwanese glove puppetry to an internationally recognized and respected art form. His efforts secured its position as a significant aspect of Taiwan's cultural heritage.
