Devdas (1979 film)
Devdas (1979 film) is a Hindi-language Indian feature film directed by Chunnilal Ghadi. It is a remake of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel Devdas. This version stars Arun Govil in the titular role of Devdas, alongside Zarina Wahab as Parvati (Paro) and Ranjeeta Kaur as Chandramukhi.
The film follows the tragic love story of Devdas, a wealthy young man, and Parvati, a woman from a middle-class family. Their childhood friendship blossoms into love, but societal pressures and family disputes prevent their union. Devastated, Devdas turns to alcohol and seeks solace in the company of Chandramukhi, a courtesan. His unfulfilled love and self-destructive behavior ultimately lead to his tragic demise.
The 1979 Devdas film is considered a lesser-known adaptation of the classic novel, often overshadowed by the more popular and lavishly produced versions such as the 1955 Bimal Roy film starring Dilip Kumar and the 2002 Sanjay Leela Bhansali film starring Shah Rukh Khan. While it attempts to capture the essence of the tragic romance, it generally received less critical acclaim compared to its predecessors and successors.
