Valchiusa

Valchiusa, also known as Vaucluse in French, is a department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southeastern France. It is designated by the number 84. The name "Valchiusa" originates from the Latin "Vallis Clausa," meaning "closed valley," and refers to the Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, a spring situated at the foot of steep cliffs in a small, enclosed valley.

The department is bordered by Gard to the west, Bouches-du-Rhône to the south, Var to the southeast, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence to the east, and Drôme to the north. Its capital is Avignon, a city historically significant for being the seat of the papacy during the 14th century. Other notable towns include Orange, Carpentras, and Cavaillon.

Valchiusa is characterized by a varied landscape, ranging from the Rhône valley in the west to the Mont Ventoux in the east, the highest peak in the department. The department is known for its agricultural production, particularly fruits, vegetables, and wine. The Côtes du Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine regions are located within Valchiusa. Tourism is also a major industry, drawn by the region's history, natural beauty, and pleasant climate. Key attractions include the Palais des Papes in Avignon, the Roman theatre in Orange, the lavender fields of the Luberon, and the ascent of Mont Ventoux, a popular cycling destination.
