Jonathan Gibbs (bishop)
Jonathan Gibbs (1923-2011) was a British Anglican bishop. He served as the Bishop of Stepney from 1976 to 1986, and subsequently as Bishop of Chelmsford from 1986 until his retirement in 1996.
Gibbs was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was ordained a priest in 1950. Before his consecration as a bishop, he held various positions within the Church of England, including chaplain, vicar, and rural dean.
As Bishop of Stepney, Gibbs was known for his work in East London, addressing social issues and engaging with diverse communities. During his time as Bishop of Chelmsford, he oversaw a large diocese and contributed to national debates within the Church of England.
He was considered a moderate within the Church of England, holding broadly centrist views on matters of theology and social policy. After retirement, Gibbs remained active in church affairs.
