David Lawrence (writer)

David Lawrence (1888-1973) was an American journalist, syndicated columnist, and publisher. He was a conservative voice in American political commentary for much of the 20th century.

Lawrence was born in Buffalo, New York, to Jewish immigrant parents. He graduated from Princeton University in 1910, where he served as editor-in-chief of The Daily Princetonian. While still a student, he began working as a correspondent for the Associated Press.

After graduation, Lawrence continued with the Associated Press, covering the Mexican Revolution and World War I from Europe. In 1918, he founded United States Daily, a newspaper devoted to covering the federal government. This publication later became United States News, and subsequently U.S. News & World Report. Lawrence served as editor and publisher of the magazine for several decades.

Lawrence's syndicated column, "Today in Washington," was widely distributed and reflected his conservative viewpoints on domestic and foreign policy. He was a strong advocate for American free enterprise and limited government. He was also a vocal critic of communism and Soviet expansionism.

Lawrence received numerous awards for his journalism, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1970. His writings offer insights into the political landscape of the United States from the early 20th century through the Cold War era.
