Gentleman Jack (TV series)
Gentleman Jack is a historical drama television series created by Sally Wainwright. It is a co-production between the BBC and HBO. The series is set in 19th-century Yorkshire and based on the collected diaries of Anne Lister, a landowner, diarist, and industrialist.
The series stars Suranne Jones as Anne Lister, a woman who is determined to restore her ancestral home, Shibden Hall, and marry a wealthy woman despite societal expectations. The show follows Lister's attempts to reopen her coal mines, improve her land, and pursue a relationship with Ann Walker, a shy and wealthy heiress portrayed by Sophie Rundle.
Gentleman Jack is notable for its direct address to the audience, where Anne Lister breaks the fourth wall to share her thoughts and intentions. The series is praised for its accurate depiction of Anne Lister based on her detailed diaries, which were partially written in code to conceal the intimate details of her relationships with other women.
The series premiered on BBC One in the United Kingdom in May 2019 and on HBO in the United States in April 2019. It ran for two seasons before being cancelled by HBO, although it remains available on BBC iPlayer.
