Castlemaine railway station (Ireland)
Castlemaine railway station served the village of Castlemaine in County Kerry, Ireland. The station was located on the Farranfore–Valentia Harbour line, a branch of the Great Southern and Western Railway (GS&WR).
Opened in 1893, the station provided passenger and freight services to the local community and surrounding areas. It facilitated the transport of agricultural produce, livestock, and other goods. Passenger traffic included locals, tourists visiting the nearby Dingle Peninsula, and individuals traveling to other parts of Ireland via connecting services at Farranfore.
The station building itself was a typical example of late 19th-century railway architecture. It included a booking office, waiting rooms, and staff accommodation. A goods shed and siding were also present to handle freight operations.
Castlemaine railway station closed to passenger traffic in 1960 as part of a wider rationalisation of the Irish railway network by Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ). Goods services continued until 1960 and the line was fully closed in 1960. The station building and associated infrastructure were subsequently dismantled.
Today, little remains of the former Castlemaine railway station. The site is now largely overgrown, with only remnants of the platform and trackbed visible. The closure of the station had a significant impact on the local community, contributing to the decline of the village and hindering economic development.
