178th Battalion (Canadien-Français), CEF
The 178th Battalion (Canadien-Français), CEF, was a unit of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) during the First World War. It was authorized on July 15, 1916, and began recruiting in Military District No. 4 (Eastern Quebec). The battalion was primarily composed of French-Canadian volunteers.
The 178th Battalion embarked for Great Britain on May 4, 1917. Upon arrival, it was initially used as a reinforcement battalion, providing drafts to other Canadian units already in the field. On July 8, 1917, the 178th Battalion was absorbed into the 10th Reserve Battalion. It never fought as a distinct battalion in France or Belgium.
The battalion was disbanded on September 15, 1917.
The 178th Battalion is perpetuated by Le Régiment de la Chaudière.
