Neva (1802 Russian ship)

The Neva was a Russian sloop-of-war launched in 1802. She is best known for being one of the two ships (along with the Nadezhda) that participated in the first Russian circumnavigation of the world from 1803 to 1806, under the command of Captain Yuri Lisyansky.

The Neva, originally a British merchant ship named Thames, was purchased by Russia. During the circumnavigation, she played a crucial role in establishing trade relations with various Pacific regions and conducting scientific observations. Lisyansky's detailed account of the voyage provides valuable historical and geographical information about the areas visited, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Canton (Guangzhou).

After the circumnavigation, the Neva continued to serve in the Russian navy. In 1807, she was involved in the Russo-Swedish War (1808-1809). Her later career included service in Alaskan waters.

The Neva was wrecked off the coast of Alaska on January 13, 1813, near Kruzof Island. All but one of the crew perished. The wreck site is now part of the Sitka National Historical Park, and archaeological investigations have been conducted on the remains of the ship. The loss of the Neva represents a significant event in the history of Russian exploration and naval history in the Pacific.
