Correfoc

The Correfoc (Catalan for "fire-run") is a communal display of fire involving devils and beasts parading through the streets, spitting and brandishing fire. It is a prominent feature of many festivals (festa majors) in Catalonia and the Valencian Community, Spain, as well as other Catalan-speaking territories.

The performance typically involves groups of people dressed as devils or mythological beasts, often equipped with handheld pyrotechnics such as firecrackers attached to pitchforks or other implements. They parade through designated routes, igniting these fireworks and creating a spectacular shower of sparks and flames. Participants and spectators often wear protective clothing, including hats, glasses, and long sleeves, to minimize the risk of burns.

The Correfoc is more than just a pyrotechnic display; it’s a participatory event where the audience is encouraged to interact with the performers and the fire (while taking necessary safety precautions). The tradition has deep roots in Catalan folklore and is considered an important expression of cultural identity. Music, usually provided by traditional percussion groups, accompanies the parade, adding to the vibrant and energetic atmosphere. While exhilarating, participation involves inherent risks of burns from sparks and fire.
