Monklands East (UK Parliament constituency)

Monklands East was a constituency of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1983 to 1997. It covered part of the Monklands district of Strathclyde Region in Scotland.

Creation and Abolition: The constituency was created in 1983, primarily from parts of the former Coatbridge and Airdrie constituency. It was abolished in 1997 and replaced by the Airdrie and Shotts constituency.

Boundaries: The seat covered areas to the east of Glasgow, including Airdrie. The precise boundaries were defined by statutory instrument and reflected local government ward boundaries at the time of creation and subsequent boundary reviews.

Political History: Monklands East gained notoriety during the 1994 Monklandsgate affair, concerning allegations of sectarianism and nepotism within Monklands District Council, controlled by the Labour Party.
