Praetorian (novel)
Praetorian is a historical fiction novel by American author Thomas Holland, first published in 2003. The novel tells the story of Marcus Falerius Fronto, a Roman soldier serving in the Praetorian Guard during the tumultuous reign of the Emperor Domitian in the late 1st century AD.
The narrative follows Fronto as he navigates the complex and often dangerous world of Roman politics, court intrigue, and military service. He becomes entangled in conspiracies, witnesses acts of brutality and betrayal, and grapples with his own moral compass amidst the corruption and paranoia that permeated Domitian's rule.
The novel explores themes of power, loyalty, ambition, and the moral compromises individuals make in the pursuit of survival and advancement within a repressive regime. It provides a detailed and often unflinching portrayal of Roman life, culture, and military organization, particularly focusing on the role and influence of the Praetorian Guard. The historical events surrounding the assassination of Domitian and the subsequent rise of Nerva are central to the plot.
