Varinder Singh (soldier)

Varinder Singh (born circa 1978, died August 5, 1999) was an Indian Army soldier who served with the 8 Sikh Regiment and was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra, India's third highest gallantry award. He earned the award for his actions during the Kargil War in 1999.

During the Battle of Dras sector in Kargil, Lance Naik Varinder Singh displayed exceptional bravery and self-sacrifice while attempting to capture a strategically important enemy position. His unit was tasked with assaulting a heavily fortified enemy post. Despite facing intense enemy fire, Singh continued to advance, providing covering fire for his fellow soldiers.

He single-handedly charged an enemy bunker, killing several enemy soldiers. Though severely wounded in the process, he continued to fight and enabled his unit to capture the post. Singh succumbed to his injuries shortly after the capture of the enemy position. His courage and leadership in the face of overwhelming odds significantly contributed to the Indian victory.
