Sambaíba

Sambaíba is a Brazilian Portuguese term, often used in rural areas, referring to a large, established ant nest, typically belonging to ants of the Atta genus, commonly known as leafcutter ants. The term generally describes the visually prominent mound or hill of loose soil and vegetation created by these ants during their excavation and construction efforts.

The size and complexity of a Sambaíba can vary considerably depending on the age of the colony, the species of Atta involved, and the environmental conditions. Larger Sambaíbas can be several meters in diameter and height, representing a significant investment of resources and labor by the ant colony. These nests house millions of ants and the fungus gardens they cultivate for food.
