John Mantle (rugby)

John Mantle (1941 – 1996) was a Welsh international rugby union player. A lock forward, he played club rugby for Newport RFC and captained Wales.

Mantle was born in Newport, Wales. He played for Newport throughout the 1960s and 1970s, becoming a club legend. A strong and uncompromising player, he was known for his tackling and work rate.

He made his international debut for Wales against England in 1963, going on to win 25 caps. He captained Wales in six matches, including a Triple Crown-winning campaign in 1969. Mantle also played for the British Lions on their tour of South Africa in 1968, appearing in two test matches.

After retiring from playing, Mantle remained involved in rugby. He served as a coach and administrator for Newport RFC. He died in 1996 at the age of 54. He is remembered as one of the great Newport and Wales forwards.
