John Beaumont (judge)

Sir John Louis Beaumont (1857 – 1941) was a British lawyer and judge who served as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court from 1930 to 1943. Educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, he was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1885.

Beaumont practiced law in England for several years before being appointed as a Puisne Judge of the Bombay High Court in 1923. He was knighted in 1930 upon his appointment as Chief Justice.

As Chief Justice, Beaumont presided over a significant period of legal development in India, including the implementation of reforms relating to civil and criminal procedure. He was known for his legal scholarship and his commitment to the rule of law. He also served on various committees relating to legal reform and education.

Beaumont retired from the Bombay High Court in 1943.
