The Hypnotist (novel)

The Hypnotist is a crime novel written by Swedish author Lars Kepler (the pseudonym of husband and wife team Alexander Ahndoril and Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril). It was first published in Sweden in 2009 and subsequently translated into English and other languages.

The novel centers on Detective Inspector Joona Linna, who investigates a gruesome triple homicide in Tumba, Sweden. The only surviving witness is a young boy, Josef, who is severely traumatized. Linna seeks the help of Erik Maria Bark, a specialist in hypnosis, to unlock Josef's memories and identify the killer. Bark is reluctant to assist, having vowed to never practice hypnosis again, but is eventually persuaded by the urgency and horror of the case.

As Bark delves into Josef's subconscious, a complex and disturbing narrative unfolds, revealing a web of family secrets and hidden connections to the murders. Linna and Bark race against time to protect Josef and his family from further harm, as the killer remains at large and continues to target them.

The Hypnotist is known for its dark atmosphere, suspenseful plot, and exploration of psychological themes, particularly the power of memory and the complexities of the human mind. It was the first book in the Joona Linna series. A film adaptation, also titled The Hypnotist, was released in 2012, directed by Lasse Hallström.
