Chelidoni

Chelidoni (Χελιδόνι) is the Greek word for "swallow," referring specifically to birds of the Hirundinidae family. The term can also be used in a broader sense within Greek culture and folklore. It's related to various traditions and beliefs, often associated with the arrival of spring and good fortune. Historically, the arrival of swallows marked an important seasonal change, impacting agriculture and daily life. In some regions of Greece, children would traditionally go door-to-door singing songs (called "Chelidonismata") to welcome the swallows and receive small gifts, a custom similar in some aspects to modern-day caroling. The swallow is also a common motif in Greek art and literature, symbolizing hope, return, and renewal.
