Deer Island (Alaska Panhandle)
Deer Island is an island located in the Alexander Archipelago of Southeast Alaska, within the Tongass National Forest. It lies in the Clarence Strait, approximately 25 miles south of Wrangell and north of Ketchikan. The island is known for its dense coniferous forests and abundant wildlife, including Sitka black-tailed deer, bears, and various bird species. Deer Island is uninhabited, although it has historically been used for logging and resource extraction. Its remoteness and lack of permanent residents contribute to its relatively pristine natural environment. Recreational activities such as hunting, fishing, and kayaking are possible, subject to applicable regulations and permits.
