Osterwald (hills)

The Osterwald is a low mountain range and ridge in Lower Saxony, Germany. It forms part of the Weser Uplands and lies between the Süntel and the Deister ridges. Geologically, the Osterwald primarily consists of sandstone formations from the Lower Cretaceous period.

The range stretches roughly from Eldagsen in the west to Osterwald (Flecken Aerzen) in the east, a distance of approximately 20 kilometers. Its highest point is the Signalberg at 419 meters above sea level. The area is characterized by its forested slopes, used primarily for forestry, and scattered settlements in the valleys and on the edges of the range.

Historically, the Osterwald was a significant area for sandstone quarrying. The Osterwald sandstone was used in various construction projects throughout the region. Coal mining also took place in the Osterwald for several centuries, although this activity has ceased.

Today, the Osterwald is a popular destination for hiking and recreation. Numerous trails crisscross the area, offering scenic views of the surrounding landscape. The area is part of the Weserbergland Nature Park.
