Mariano Acosta (politician)
Mariano Acosta (September 8, 1825 – April 17, 1893) was an Argentine politician and lawyer. He served as Governor of Buenos Aires Province from 1872 to 1874 and as Vice President of Argentina under President Nicolás Avellaneda from 1874 to 1880.
Born in Buenos Aires, Acosta studied law at the University of Buenos Aires and became involved in politics at a young age. He held various political positions throughout his career, including positions in the provincial legislature and national congress. As Governor of Buenos Aires Province, he focused on infrastructure development and improving public education.
As Vice President, Acosta played a significant role in the federalization of Buenos Aires in 1880, which resolved a long-standing conflict between the city and the rest of the country. He also oversaw the construction of important public works projects.
After leaving office, Acosta continued to be involved in public life until his death in 1893. He is remembered as a significant figure in Argentine history, particularly for his role in the federalization of Buenos Aires.
