Andacollo

Andacollo is a town and commune located in the Elqui Province, Coquimbo Region, Chile. It is situated approximately 56 kilometers (35 miles) southeast of the regional capital, La Serena. The town is known primarily for its religious significance, being home to the Basilica of Our Lady of Andacollo, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Chile.

History:

The origins of Andacollo predate the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. The area was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples, particularly the Diaguita culture. The name "Andacollo" is believed to derive from a combination of indigenous Quechua and Spanish words, possibly related to copper mining or the land itself.

The arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century brought significant changes. According to tradition, the image of the Virgin Mary appeared to an indigenous miner in the area, leading to the establishment of the first shrine. Over time, this small shrine evolved into the present-day Basilica.

Religious Significance:

Andacollo's primary claim to fame is the annual Fiesta Grande (Great Festival) dedicated to the Virgin of Andacollo. Held annually from December 23rd to 26th, it attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from across Chile and neighboring countries. The festival involves elaborate processions, traditional dances, and religious ceremonies. A smaller festival, the Fiesta Chica (Small Festival), is held in early October.

Economy:

Historically, mining, especially copper mining, has been a significant part of Andacollo's economy. Agriculture, including grape cultivation, also contributes. Tourism, linked to the religious festivals and the Basilica, is increasingly important.

Demographics:

Andacollo has a relatively small population. As of the most recent census data, the population of the commune is around 11,000.

Geography:

Andacollo is located in a mountainous region of the Coquimbo Region. The climate is arid, typical of northern Chile.
