NGC 477

NGC 477 is a barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Cassiopeia. It is estimated to be approximately 80 million light-years from Earth and is a member of the NGC 507 group of galaxies.

NGC 477 exhibits a well-defined bar structure and prominent spiral arms that are actively forming stars. These regions of star formation are visible as bright blue knots within the arms. The galaxy's nucleus appears to be relatively inactive, lacking the strong emission lines characteristic of active galactic nuclei (AGN).

The galaxy was discovered on October 18, 1786, by William Herschel. He cataloged it as IV. 20. Its apparent magnitude is around 13, making it a faint object requiring a moderately sized telescope to observe. It is often observed alongside other members of the NGC 507 group, offering a glimpse into the dynamics and interactions within galaxy clusters.
