Monofin

A monofin is a type of swimfin typically used in finswimming, freediving, and competitive swimming. Unlike traditional swimfins which have separate blades for each foot, a monofin consists of a single, usually large, blade attached to foot pockets for both feet.

The monofin's design mimics the tail fin of marine mammals like dolphins and whales, allowing for a powerful and efficient underwater propulsion through a dolphin-like kick. This kick involves using the entire body, from the head to the toes, to generate a wave-like motion that drives the monofin through the water.

Monofins are typically made from materials such as fiberglass, carbon fiber, or composite materials, offering varying degrees of stiffness and flexibility. The stiffness of the blade is a critical factor in determining the fin's performance, with stiffer blades generally preferred for experienced swimmers seeking maximum speed, while more flexible blades are often used by beginners or for longer-distance swimming.
