Eastern Football Conference (1965–1974)

The Eastern Football Conference (EFC) was a collegiate athletic conference that existed from 1965 to 1974. It primarily comprised schools located in the Northeastern United States and was focused on the sport of American football. The conference aimed to provide a more competitive football environment for its members.

Membership in the EFC fluctuated during its ten-year existence. Some notable members included schools like the University of Connecticut, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the University of Rhode Island, the University of Maine, and Boston University. The conference generally operated with a tiered structure based on program size and ambition, with some schools focusing on Division I-AA (now FCS) level competition and others playing at a lower level.

The EFC did not maintain a stable membership throughout its run, with teams joining and leaving as institutional priorities and conference affiliations shifted. Ultimately, the Eastern Football Conference dissolved in 1974. Schools then pursued different avenues for their football programs, including joining other conferences or operating as independent programs. The conference is remembered as a transitional step in the evolution of college football in the Northeast.
