Jane Eyre (1970 film)

The 1970 film Jane Eyre is a British television film adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's 1847 novel of the same name. Directed by Delbert Mann, it stars Susannah York as Jane Eyre and George C. Scott as Edward Rochester. The screenplay was written by Jack Pulman.

The film largely follows the plot of the novel, depicting Jane's journey from a mistreated orphan at Gateshead Hall, through her education at Lowood School, to her employment as a governess at Thornfield Hall. At Thornfield, she falls in love with her employer, Mr. Rochester, before discovering the obstacle to their marriage in the form of his insane wife, Bertha Mason, kept locked away in the attic. Jane then flees Thornfield, finding refuge with the Rivers family, before eventually returning to a now-blinded Rochester at Ferndean Manor.

This adaptation is known for its faithfulness to the novel's gothic atmosphere and themes, as well as the strong performances of its lead actors. While a television film, it was also released theatrically in some markets. It received generally positive reviews upon its release.
