Oxyethira

Oxyethira is a genus of microcaddisflies belonging to the family Hydroptilidae. These are very small insects, typically only a few millimeters in length. They are found worldwide, with a wide distribution across North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia.

As with all caddisflies, Oxyethira undergo complete metamorphosis, with aquatic larvae that construct portable cases from silk and detritus. The larval cases are often distinctive and can be used for species identification, although adult characteristics are generally needed for definitive classification.

The larvae of Oxyethira are primarily found in slow-flowing or stagnant water habitats, such as ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams. They feed on algae and detritus.

Adult Oxyethira are nocturnal and attracted to light. They are weak fliers and are often found near their larval habitats. Identification of Oxyethira species can be challenging, requiring examination of the genitalia of both males and females.

The genus includes numerous species, with new species continuing to be described. The taxonomy and phylogeny of Oxyethira are complex and subject to ongoing research. They play a role in freshwater ecosystems as both consumers of algae and detritus, and as a food source for fish and other aquatic predators.
