Vieta (crater)

Vieta is a lunar impact crater located on the eastern edge of Mare Nubium. It lies to the southwest of the prominent crater Bullialdus, and to the northeast of the Rupes Recta, a notable linear rille.

This crater has a low, eroded rim that is heavily worn. Several small craterlets lie along the rim's edge and inner walls. The interior floor is relatively featureless, with a few minor irregularities. The overall appearance of Vieta suggests that it has been subjected to considerable modification from subsequent impacts and volcanic activity on Mare Nubium.

Vieta is named after the French mathematician François Viète, often referred to by the Latinized name Franciscus Vieta.
