Ed Bosson
Ed Bosson (1937 – 2019) was an American character actor best known for his role as Howard Hunter, the gruff but ultimately good-hearted police chief, on the NBC television series Hill Street Blues. He appeared in the show from 1981 to 1987.
Prior to Hill Street Blues, Bosson had a long and varied career in film and television, often playing authority figures, often with a comedic edge. His film credits include roles in Bullitt (1968), Five Easy Pieces (1970), The Last Detail (1973), Cujo (1983), and Ghostbusters (1984). He also made guest appearances on numerous television shows, including Mannix, The Mod Squad, MASH*, and Murder, She Wrote.
After Hill Street Blues, Bosson continued to work in television, notably as Sheriff Bill Hollister on the ABC series Murder One (1995-1996) and as a recurring character on the NBC series ER (1998-2002).
Bosson was known for his distinctive voice and his ability to bring a sense of authenticity and depth to his characters. He was a respected and admired actor within the industry, contributing memorable performances across a wide range of genres. He was married to artist Helen Bosson until his death.
