SelecTV (Australian television)

SelecTV was an Australian subscription television service that operated from 1998 to 2010. It was a joint venture between Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL) and Austar Entertainment. Initially, SelecTV offered a range of movie and sports channels via satellite, targeting viewers outside of major metropolitan areas already serviced by Foxtel.

SelecTV differentiated itself by focusing on flexibility and affordability. Viewers could choose to subscribe to individual channels or channel packages, offering a greater degree of control over their subscription costs compared to other subscription television providers. This "a la carte" approach was a key selling point.

The service underwent several changes throughout its operation, including adjustments to its channel lineup and subscription pricing. In its later years, SelecTV also offered set-top boxes for sale, enabling customers to receive free-to-air digital television channels in addition to its subscription content.

Ultimately, SelecTV faced increasing competition from larger players in the subscription television market, as well as the growth of free-to-air digital services. In 2010, Austar announced that it would cease broadcasting the SelecTV service, citing the increasingly competitive landscape. Existing SelecTV subscribers were offered options to transition to Austar subscriptions. The SelecTV brand is no longer active.
