Grant Avenue station (BMT Fulton Street Line)

Grant Avenue was a station on the demolished BMT Fulton Street Line in Brooklyn, New York City. It was located at the intersection of Grant Avenue and Fulton Street.

History:

The station opened in 1888 as part of the original Fulton Street Elevated. Constructed and operated by the Brooklyn Elevated Railroad (later part of the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation, or BMT), Grant Avenue station served local traffic along Fulton Street. The line and station were elevated above street level, supported by a steel structure.

The Fulton Street El served as a vital transportation artery for Brooklyn for many years. However, by the mid-20th century, the elevated structure had become outdated and considered an eyesore. Furthermore, it was seen as an impediment to street-level traffic flow.

The elevated line east of Rockaway Avenue was closed on April 26, 1956, and subsequently demolished. This included the Grant Avenue station. The BMT Fulton Street Subway, built in the median of Fulton Street, replaced the elevated line. The subway station closest to the former Grant Avenue elevated station is Broadway–East New York station.

Station Layout:

The station consisted of two side platforms serving two tracks. It was typical of other stations on the Fulton Street El, with a simple wooden structure. Access to the platforms was via staircases from street level. There were fare control booths located at street level. The station offered local service only.
