Asayish (Kurdistan Region)
The Asayish (Kurdish: ئاسایش, meaning "Security") is the official security organization of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It functions as the primary intelligence, internal security, and law enforcement agency within the autonomous region.
The Asayish operates separately from the Iraqi Federal Police and military, reflecting the Kurdistan Region's autonomous status. Its responsibilities include combating terrorism, preventing crime, gathering intelligence, protecting government officials and infrastructure, and maintaining general security and stability.
The organization is structured into directorates and departments with specific areas of focus, such as counter-terrorism, intelligence gathering, public order, and protection of vital installations. It maintains a significant presence across the Kurdistan Region, with personnel stationed in major cities and towns.
The Asayish has been involved in a number of security operations, including the fight against ISIS and other extremist groups. It also works to address issues related to organized crime, drug trafficking, and other threats to public safety.
The Asayish is accountable to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and operates under its legal framework. The organization has faced criticism regarding alleged human rights abuses and lack of transparency, similar to security forces in other contexts. Reforms and oversight mechanisms have been proposed and implemented over time to address these concerns and improve accountability.
