Frank Brown (governor)

Frank Brown (August 8, 1846 – February 3, 1920) was an American politician who served as the 41st Governor of Maryland from 1892 to 1896.

Born in Brown's Inheritance, Carroll County, Maryland, Brown was a prominent member of the Democratic Party in Maryland. He did not attend college but was involved in business ventures prior to his political career, including farming and serving as president of the Maryland Agricultural and Mechanical Association.

As governor, Brown focused on improving Maryland's infrastructure and economy. His administration oversaw the construction of new roads and the expansion of the state's railroad network. He also advocated for improvements in education and the state's agricultural sector.

One of the significant events during his governorship was the Oyster War of 1893-1894, a conflict over oyster harvesting rights in the Chesapeake Bay. Brown responded by deploying the state militia to maintain order and enforce laws regulating oyster harvesting.

Following his term as governor, Brown remained active in public life, serving on various boards and commissions. He also pursued business interests, including real estate development. He died in Baltimore in 1920. His legacy includes infrastructure improvements and efforts to address the Oyster Wars during his tenure as governor.
