Ai-Toghdï

Ai-Toghdï (also spelled Ai-Togdi, Ay-Togdy) is a historical geographic location and oasis in Central Asia, primarily associated with the medieval Uyghur kingdom centered around the Turpan Basin. Located north of Turpan, it served as a significant stopping point on the Silk Road.

Ai-Toghdï's importance stemmed from its freshwater source in an otherwise arid region. This made it a vital location for caravans traveling east and west, providing water and respite for travelers and their animals. It also allowed for agriculture and the development of a settled community.

Historically, Ai-Toghdï was an important center for Uyghur culture and administration, especially during the period when the Uyghur Khaganate moved west to the Turpan region following the collapse of the Second Turkic Khaganate. Archaeological evidence, including manuscript fragments and ruins, suggests a flourishing of Buddhist and Manichaean traditions alongside Turkic cultural elements. While specific details regarding the settlement's administrative structure are still debated, it is understood to have been under the control of the Uyghur rulers in the nearby capital cities such as Qocho (Gaochang).

The historical significance of Ai-Toghdï lies in its role as a key oasis settlement along the Silk Road, its connection to the Uyghur Khaganate, and its contribution to the cultural exchange between East and West during the medieval period. The area continues to be of interest to archaeologists and historians studying the history of the region.
