State Highway 71 (New Zealand)

State Highway 71 (SH71) is a short state highway in the North Island of New Zealand, linking the towns of Waiouru and Ohakune. It forms part of a secondary east-west route across the central North Island, connecting State Highway 1 (SH1) to State Highway 4 (SH4). The highway is approximately 28 kilometers (17 miles) in length.

SH71 begins at its junction with SH1 just north of Waiouru Military Camp. It travels generally westward through sparsely populated farmland, gradually climbing in altitude. It passes through the small settlement of Rangataua before terminating at its junction with SH4 on the southern outskirts of Ohakune, near the base of Mount Ruapehu.

The highway provides an alternative route for traffic bypassing the more heavily trafficked SH1 further north. It also serves as an important link for access to the southern slopes of Mount Ruapehu and the Turoa ski field during winter.
