Lake Gregory (Nuwara Eliya)
Lake Gregory, also known as Gregory Lake, is a reservoir in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka. It was constructed during the period of British Governor Sir William Gregory in 1873 by damming the Thalawakelle stream. Originally intended for providing electricity, the lake is now a major tourist attraction.
Located in the heart of Nuwara Eliya, Lake Gregory is surrounded by hills and tea plantations. The area around the lake has been developed into a recreational area, with activities such as boat rides, jet skiing, pony rides, and walking paths available. The climate around the lake is typically cool and misty, reflecting the general weather conditions of Nuwara Eliya.
The lake contributes to the scenic beauty of Nuwara Eliya and is a popular spot for both locals and tourists seeking leisure activities and relaxation. Several hotels and guesthouses are located near the lake, catering to the influx of visitors. The annual Nuwara Eliya season in April brings an increase in tourism to the lake and surrounding area.
