Horizon (2014 video game)

Horizon is a cancelled massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that was being developed by Monumental Games. The game was announced in 2011 and was slated for a 2014 release on PC.

Overview:

Horizon was intended to be a free-to-play, browser-based MMORPG with a focus on player-driven content and emergent gameplay. The game's setting was a persistent, evolving world where players could build settlements, engage in crafting, trade, and participate in large-scale conflicts.

Key Features (as announced):

  • Dynamic World: Horizon promised a living world that would react to player actions and events, with seasons, weather patterns, and resource availability affecting gameplay.
  • Player-Driven Economy: The game's economy was intended to be entirely player-driven, with players controlling the production, distribution, and pricing of goods.
  • Settlement Building: Players were meant to be able to collaborate to build and develop settlements, which could then be defended against other players or AI threats.
  • Crafting and Trading: A robust crafting system was planned, allowing players to create a wide variety of items and resources for personal use or trade.
  • Conflict and Warfare: Horizon was to feature various forms of conflict, including player-versus-player (PvP) combat, territorial disputes, and siege warfare.

Cancellation:

Despite the initial hype and public demonstrations, Horizon faced numerous delays and ultimately was never released. Monumental Games went into administration (the UK equivalent of bankruptcy) in 2012. The assets were later acquired by Prolific Games, but development on Horizon was not continued. The game remains unreleased.
