Second Hand (band)

Second Hand were a British progressive rock band active in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Formed in London in 1968, the band was known for its experimental and often dissonant sound, blending elements of psychedelic rock, jazz, and avant-garde music.

The original lineup featured Ken Elliott (keyboards, vocals), Kieran O'Connor (drums), and Nick South (bass). Their early work, particularly their debut album Reality, showcased a raw and energetic style, leaning heavily into psychedelic influences.

A significant shift in sound occurred with the arrival of Robert Lambert (guitar, vocals) in 1970. Lambert's more classically influenced compositional style, combined with the band's existing experimental tendencies, resulted in their most acclaimed and complex album, Death May Be Your Santa Claus, released in 1971. This album is characterized by its intricate arrangements, dark lyrical themes, and demanding instrumental passages.

Despite gaining a cult following and receiving positive critical reception for Death May Be Your Santa Claus, Second Hand struggled to achieve mainstream success. Internal tensions and disagreements over musical direction eventually led to the band's breakup in 1972.

In the years following their dissolution, Second Hand's music experienced a resurgence of interest, particularly among progressive rock fans. Their albums have been reissued multiple times, and they are now recognized as an important, if somewhat obscure, contributor to the early British progressive rock scene. Ken Elliott continued to be involved in music after the band's split, working on various projects.
