ORP Orkan (G90)

ORP Orkan (G90) was a Gawron-class corvette of the Polish Navy. The Gawron class was based on the Project 621 design, a modified version of the Project 1241RE (Tarantul I-class) missile corvettes. The ORP Orkan was the second ship of the class to be laid down but the first to enter service.

The ship was designed primarily for coastal defense, patrol duties, and escort missions in the Baltic Sea. Her armament included anti-ship missiles, anti-aircraft missiles, and a medium-caliber gun, along with close-in weapon systems for self-defense. She also possessed sensors and electronic warfare systems.

The keel was laid in 1990 at the Northern Shipyard in Gdańsk, Poland. Construction was protracted due to funding constraints following the collapse of communism and the subsequent economic transition in Poland. She was finally commissioned into the Polish Navy in 2000.

ORP Orkan (G90) was actively involved in naval exercises and operations in the Baltic Sea, contributing to maritime security and cooperation with other NATO navies. In 2023, ORP Orkan (G90) was decommissioned from active service in the Polish Navy. She was replaced in service by a newer Swedish-designed Miecznik-class frigate, furthering Poland's naval modernization program.
