Thomas E. Ricks (Mormon pioneer)

Thomas Edwin Ricks (1828-1907) was a prominent figure in the early settlement and development of Cache Valley, Utah, and a leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Born in Trumansburg, New York, he joined the Church as a young man and participated in the Mormon exodus west.

Ricks served in the Mormon Battalion, a volunteer unit that marched to California during the Mexican-American War. Upon his return, he settled in the Salt Lake Valley. He was later called to lead a group of pioneers to Cache Valley, where he played a significant role in establishing the community of Logan. He served as the first bishop of the Logan Ward and later as the president of the Cache Stake, overseeing numerous congregations.

Known for his leadership and agricultural skills, Ricks was instrumental in developing irrigation systems and promoting agricultural advancements in the region. He was also involved in establishing educational institutions, including Brigham Young College in Logan. He held various civic positions, contributing to the economic and social development of Cache Valley. His legacy includes his contributions to community building, religious leadership, and agricultural development in the early Utah Territory.
