Joe Goss

Joe Goss (1838 – 1885) was an English bare-knuckle boxer who was recognised as the American heavyweight champion.

Goss was born in Northampton, England. He emigrated to the United States as a child. He became a prominent figure in the bare-knuckle boxing scene of the mid-19th century.

Goss claimed the American heavyweight title in 1869 after defeating Tom Allen in a grueling 21-round fight. While his claim to the championship is sometimes debated, his victory over Allen solidified his reputation as a top fighter of his era.

After retiring from fighting, Goss became a boxing instructor and saloon owner. He died in 1885. His career helped to bridge the gap between the rough-and-tumble bare-knuckle era and the more regulated gloved boxing that would follow.
