John Phillips (bishop of Sodor and Man)
John Phillips (died 1633) was an English clergyman who served as the Bishop of Sodor and Man from 1605 until his death. Little is definitively known about his early life and education, although it is speculated he may have had Welsh origins.
Phillips's episcopate saw a period of transition and some resistance to the imposition of more standardized Anglican practices on the Isle of Man, which had historically enjoyed considerable ecclesiastical autonomy. He faced challenges in enforcing conformity with the Thirty-Nine Articles and other aspects of the English Reformation settlement.
His legacy is primarily remembered through the ecclesiastical records of his time and some surviving correspondence. He is not known to have produced significant theological or literary works. He was succeeded as Bishop of Sodor and Man by Richard Parr. He is buried in the churchyard of Kirk Michael, Isle of Man.
