The Saturday Magazine (magazine)
The Saturday Magazine was a British weekly illustrated magazine published from 1832 to 1844. It was published under the direction of the Committee of General Literature and Education appointed by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK). The magazine aimed to provide affordable and accessible educational and entertaining content for a general readership, particularly the working class. Its content included articles on science, history, travel, biography, natural history, and social issues. It featured woodcut illustrations to enhance its appeal. The magazine was intended to be morally uplifting and religiously sound, reflecting the aims of the SPCK. Although successful for a time in promoting these goals, it eventually ceased publication due to financial difficulties and changing tastes.
