Leominster (district)

Leominster is a local government district in Herefordshire, England, covering the town of Leominster and the surrounding rural areas. The district was formed in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, merging the former borough of Leominster, Leominster Rural District and part of Weobley Rural District.

Leominster district historically provided a range of local services, including planning, housing, environmental health, and waste collection. However, in 1998, Herefordshire became a unitary authority, abolishing the district councils and transferring their powers and responsibilities to Herefordshire Council.

The name "Leominster" derives from the Old English "Lēofminstre," meaning "minster of Leofa." The district's economy is primarily based on agriculture, tourism, and small businesses. Key features within the former district boundaries include Leominster Priory, a significant historical landmark.

Since the abolition of the district council, the area is represented by electoral wards within Herefordshire Council. The town of Leominster itself retains a town council that exercises certain limited powers and responsibilities.
