Republic Day (Nepal)
Republic Day in Nepal (Nepali: गणतन्त्र दिवस, Gaṇatantra Divas) is a national holiday celebrated annually on Jestha 15th in the Nepali calendar (typically May 28th-29th). It commemorates the declaration of Nepal as a Federal Democratic Republic, officially abolishing the 240-year-old monarchy on May 28, 2008 (Jestha 15, 2065 BS).
The day is marked by parades, cultural programs, and public celebrations across the country. Government buildings are illuminated, and national flags are flown. Speeches by political leaders and community figures emphasize the importance of democracy and national unity.
The declaration of the republic followed a decade-long Maoist insurgency and subsequent peace process, culminating in elections to the Constituent Assembly. The Assembly was tasked with drafting a new constitution, which was ultimately promulgated in 2015.
Republic Day is a public holiday, and many Nepalese citizens take part in celebrations and commemorative events. It signifies a pivotal moment in Nepal's history, marking the transition from a monarchy to a democratic system of governance. The day is a reminder of the sacrifices made to achieve democracy and serves as an opportunity to reflect on the progress and challenges facing the nation.
